For the next two weeks you can see three new examples of my photography at the Made in Greenwich gallery - 324 Creek Road, Greenwich, London SE10 (opposite the Cutty Sark DLR station). I have gone for an eclectic mix of abstract night shots taken in the New Forest and Devon and a early morning shot taken from the Isle of Grain. All were very long exposures of about 3-5 minutes and use various effects including light painting. Do try and get down for a look!

The gallery is open from Thursday - Sunday 11am to 5.30pm.

The prints are of Canary Wharf, Greenwich and The QE2 bridge as you have never seen it before! They produced a full page article concentrating on my photography career and highlighting my exhibition to enncourage local readers to visit.

The mini exhibition is opposite Robert Dyas (next door to Waitrose) and is on until Friday 25th May.

I am pleased to announce I will be exhibiting some of my photos of Greenwich at the new gallery in Creek Road, Greenwich, called 'Made in Greenwich'

I will be showing five large prints, all taken around the Greenwich area. As well as some new takes on conventional views I have included some more abstract works taken in Greenwich Park which were inspired by various artists I admire. The gallery will be hosting many disciplines, including glassware, ceramics and fabrics and is really worth a visit. There is some great work there! Please come down and support a local business.

The gallery will be open Thursday to Sunday, including Bank Holidays, from 11am to 5.30pm and is located at 324 Creek Road, Greenwich SE10 9SW and is opposite Cutty Sark DLR station.

	The exhibition ends May 5th.

	Hope you can make it!

New shot of Canary Wharf

Today I published a new shot of Canary Wharf (you can see the whole shot here) which I really like. I was lucky to get this shot as a heavy mist was forming and would soon obscure my view completely, but as it hung over the City of London it absorbed and dissipated the bright lights at street level and created an eerie glow which hung, radiating light above central London (on the left of the image) in a small pocket of mist. The mist moved in quickly after that and ruined the view, but I was lucky to see it forming.

I took four shots on my P25+ with a 35mm lens to get the whole view, then cropped it to the aesthetically pleasing 6x17 panoramic format.

You cannot get an impression of just how sharp this photograph is on my website, so I have attached here a crop of the detail from the bottom left hand corner. Just click on the small image above this text to see it enlarged. It even surprises me how sharp it is sometimes!

I dont think I have ever been so cold as when taking this photograph, it was already -3C, that on top of the wind chill factor made it seem much colder. I was lucky the mist was coming in so the wind dropped!

Long Service Award - from the British Institute of Professional Photography

I received a nice surprise this morning in the post, my Long Service Award certificate (20 years continuous membership) from the BIPP! It doesn't seem that long ago since I joined!! There are a couple of other milestones this year, my 50th birthday and I am also celebrating my 30th year as a professional photographer! Quite a momentous year all in all.

When I look back at how my career started, it was my positive attitude that helped me get started. I got my first job interview in the Selfridges Portrait Studio by just turning up and asking for a job, I thought that's how it was done!. There weren't any going at the time, but they interviewed me anyway as I was there, and three month later when they were short staffed I got a call offering me a job if I could start the same day. It seemed a bit mad sat at home one minute then helping out on a shoot photographing a Nigerian Prince and his extended family later that day!

After leaving Selfridges to start my own business, I was told a year later that the current studio (my old employers) was closing and so made an appointment to see one of the directors to try and get the contract for myself. They were not sure at first, given I was only 24, but I think our enthusiasm won them over and we were given a chance subject to some very strict targets to meet. If we met them we were in! We ended up exceeding all our targets by miles and securing a working relationship with Selfridges on our terms that lasted 12 years.

It just goes to show, 'if you don't ask you don't get', which is something that is as true today as it was then. If I hadn't been brave enough to walk into Selfridges and ask for that job my career might have taken an entirely different path.

I recently posted a new photograph, Greenwich Night Panorama and it occurred to me after seeing it on line that it gave no indication as to how sharp the final image is! So here is a 100% crop of the detail of the Canary Wharf buildings to show you how sharp this image is. It should be sharp really having been made from several Phase One images, but you may be surprised how sharp!

I was just experimenting with slow shutter speeds (yes it is possible on the iPhone, using the 'Slow Shutter Cam' app) and trying to emphasise the grungey look of the wet weather.

I have only posted a couple on my site but the rest are here on my facebook page as they were just a bit of fun! Let me know what you think!

Green Chain Captured Workshops

I will be leading a free photographic workshop this year for the Green Chain in association with Elixir Gallery, on the 14th and 15th February. Information below, and PDF download here!

Need some advice on what makes a really great nature photograph? There will be three FREE photographic workshops led by professional photographers on walks along the route as follows:

14th February 3-5pm with Mike Curry, 15th February 2-4pm with Mike Curry; 21st February 3-5pm with Ian Cook.

For further information and updates about free workshops, please visit this page again in the new year 2012 or email jeanie.mcnulty@nhs.net or call 020 8836 5831.

The workshops will take place on afternoon walks along the Green Chain route in the Woolwich / Charlton area in February. Booking is preferred but not essential, you can just turn up on the day; contact us for locations of starting points. The routes will be confirmed nearer the time but will start or finish at train stations or main bus stops, for safety and convenience. Unless it’s torrential rain, the walks will still take place, so please come dressed appropriately and bring your camera.
Two professional Greenwich-based photographers will lead the workshops:
	Mike Curry 14th February 3-5pm
	15th February 2-4pm.
Half-term week, ideal for families and students, but under 17s should please be accompanied by an adult.
	Ian Cook 21st February 3-5pm.
You can attend as many workshops as you like. The aim is to provide expert advice on what makes a great nature or landscape photograph. You don’t have to stay with the group for the whole two hours. It will be a mixed ability group – beginners are welcome as are those with experience; the photographers will aim to spend time with everyone during the walk and to answer queries. However, they are not experts on every make of camera so please consult your manual!
Bookings will be confirmed with the location of the meeting place.

I took this photo earlier this summer while on a walk in Greenwich Park. It was taken with my infra red converted camera. I just loved the contrast between the trees and the buildings, like the trees were encroaching on Canary Wharf . I never realised how many trees there were until I looked at the photo after.

I actually took these photos and never did anything with them at the time, I supose i was busy and just left them on the hard drive to be discovered another day. Quite pleased I re-discovered them now!

The infra red effect makes the foliage look white and a lot of people mistake it for frost! I had to turn down a magazine front cover once as they wanted one of these type of shots for their winter edition! I couldnt let them make such a big mistake and of course when I pointed out it was taken in summer they changed their minds!

Had a great day teaching on Saturday in Whitstable, Kent with a customer of mine, Luis. Managed to pack loads into the day and got some great feedback.

Here is a shot I took from the end of the pier. It was taken on my P25+ using a 10 stop neutral density filter, therefore slowing the bright sunlight an ethereal 30 seconds, which really brings out the misty sea spray I think! I would normally shoot much longer shutter speeds than this even, but this time I think it enhanced the sea spray nicely!

You shouldn’t let anonymous online critics dictate how you photograph

You shouldn’t let anonymous online critics dictate how you photograph! Great advice worth repeating here..! See this link for the story and accompanying photo http://goo.gl/Xte6F

Back in 2006, Flickr user André Rabelo submitted to the group pool of DeleteMe!, a group whose members vote on photos to weed out any photos that aren’t “incredible pictures, amazing, astonishing, perfect”. Sadly, the photograph was very quickly removed by popular vote.

Here are some of the criticisms the voters had:

"When everything is blurred you cannot convey the motion of the bicyclist. On the other hand, if the bicyclist is not the subject– what was?"

"Why is the staircase so “soft”? Camera shake? Like the angle though."

What’s funny about this story is that Rabelo had the last laugh — the photograph is actually “Hyeres, France, 1932″, a famous photograph by the French photographer and “father of modern photojournalism”, Henri Cartier-Bresson. Made in 1932, the photo sold at auction in 2008 for a whopping $265,000.

This just goes to show that you shouldn’t let anonymous online critics dictate how you photograph. While it’s great to receive feedback and certainly worthwhile to hear things that help you improve your technique, the criticisms you hear online are often from people who don’t know what they’re talking about, so don’t give too much weight to negative comments!

The Daymark - Kingswear - Devon

My new photo, The Daymark taken on the Kingswear headland opposite Dartmouth, shows what can be achieved with a little imagination and the correct conditions! I was actually on a short break with my wife and some friends and wouldn't normally go off taking photos, but I spotted the Daymark on a daytime walk and thought it would look great photographed at night. I didnt think much more of it, but on the last night he conditions were perfect for what I had imagined, so I set off with only my camera, tripod and a LED Lenser P14 torch. Unusually my wife requested to come along, so when I got there I felt it gave me a sense of urgency that I dont normally possess!!

The one thing I would have normally done for a night shoot was to do a proper recce during daylight and marked the ground and measured the focal distance, or at least get there before the sun was down to enable me to focus the lens, but no it was pitch black! Nothing for it then but to guessitmate a few distances and then check focus on the camera back. I was surprised that I got it so wrong the first few guesses!

After sorting out focus I set did a couple of test runs of exposures, painting with the torch until I had illuminated the structure enough and also exposed the sky enough too. I was very lucky that the long exposures brought out what colours were left in the night sky and that the torch's focusable high intensity beam was easily up to the job of lighting it up with a few up and down motions. When doing this I have to make sure that I position my body between the torch head and the camera, so the torch head didnt show, then switch it off before returning to the camera.

The first couple of attempts were a bit flat I thought, so I added some foreground interest by painting the torch on the ground, again making sure the torch head faced away from the camera so all that shows was the beam's impression on the ground.

The final image here was a 2.5 minute exposure with me running around like a mad thing in the dark to get from place to place with the torch! I hope you like the result!!

I am delighted to be working with Wilson Benesch a manufacturer of high end audiophile speakers from Sheffield, UK. A company with a unique time line of collaboration, invention, and relentless innovation. A manufacturing company with a track record of re-investment in advanced manufacturing technologies in both metal and advanced carbon fibre composite structures. Above all, a company that has earned a global reputation by virtue of its unswerving commitment to elegant engineered solutions to complex engineering problems.

They will be creating some 3m x 4m display panels from my photos, including Deal Seafront II to be displayed at the High End Society show, the most successful European show for high quality consumer electronics and cutting edge hi-fi. I am also going to be creating some images of their new Geometry range in the near future.

New Forest - Light on Dark

Just back from a quick trip to the New Forest In Hampshire where I was trying my hand at light painting. I have been wanting to try light painting for some time and after a bit of research it seemed like the New forest would be a good place to experiment. Just getting to my location carrying 38kg of kit - on my own - was a feat! After some exposure tests, all the shots were pretty much first takes from ideas I’d formulated before. Shooting in the forest at midnight was an eerie experience, quite often I would hear twigs snapping as animals moved around, or turn around to see two green eyes staring at me, only to realise it was a New Forest pony! Shots available to see here

	More info as promised....

I used various pieces of lighting on the shoot including: Nikon SB900 flash units, LED Lenser P14 torch, and a fluorescent strip light which was powered by a portable (13kg!) battery with a normal 3 pin socket. The flash units were used to light the tops of the trees and give some detail to the foliage, but on 200 asa the tree canopy needed at least 6 full power bursts to illuminate anything! I was shocked at how much power was needed!

The tree trunks were lit with the torch which at 200 lumens (powerful for a torch - think car headlight brightness, but with the ability to focus the beam) was easily up to the job. My estimate of two scans up and down the tree was just about perfect exposure. The strip light was trickier to deal with as it necessitated tripping the shutter with the tube out of view, then walking a planned route across the view, then turning it off and returning to close the shutter!

I have to say I was quite lucky with the results, as all exposures pretty much came out correctly first time. or maybe that was just skill ;-) still it was all great fun apart from the Blair Witch moments when animals kept creeping around and scaring me!

If you would like any more information just leave a comment below.

I am grateful to my contacts in the trade who have helped me acquire an Infra Red converted P21+ Phase One back to replace my Olympus E3. Its taken over a year of persuasion and persistence to get one, but I’m sure it will be worth it. The test shots look amazing! I now cant wait for all the leaves to come out on the trees so I can get some great shots. Another benefit is having less kit to carry round, which is always welcome!
